Protecting Our Community from Transnational Repression

UNT is committed to safeguarding our researchers and students against transnational repression.

Transnational Repression occurs when a foreign government attempts to intimidate, monitor, or influence individuals living in the United States. These activities can threaten personal safety, compromise research integrity, and undermine academic freedom.

What You Should Know

Foreign governments may use a range of tactics to pressure or silence individuals abroad, such as:

• Attempts to gather info about your research or colleagues 

• Harassment or threats delivered online or through social media

• Pressure to avoid certain topics, events, or collaborations 

• Threats directed at family members living outside of the US 

• Coercive requests to return to your home country 

• Unwanted contact from individuals claiming to represent foreign authorities 

If you experience any of these tactics, you are not alone and do not have to handle it on your own.
